Swimmers make fantastic progress during Intensive Sessions

Posted On: 03 July 2018

A massive well done to all the children (and staff) involved in the recent intensive swimming sessions at Burnt Mill! The progress these children made in 4 weeks was immense and could have only been facilitated by the wonderful team work from all the adults involved – this includes the drivers of the minibuses: the staff to supervise going to and from the pool; staff at poolside; the swimming instructors; the school catering staff for ensuring the early meals were prepared and the site managers for washing and drying the kit after every session to ensure it was ready for the following day!

Of the 29 children in Year 6 who attended all made fantastic progress; 22 children have met the National Curriculum requirement of 25m Front and Back.

The Burnt Mill instructors were delighted with the efforts of the children and the ‘positive attitude of our staff and school’ They wrote:

Hi David.
I wanted to let you know how pleased we all are with the progress of the Church Langley Year 5 and 6 swimmers. Many non-swimmers are now swimming and the majority of weak swimmers are swimming lengths and working in the deep end.

The great progress we have seen is largely down to the approach you have adopted in getting all your pupils assessed as to whether they are able to swim 25m (KS2 exit requirement) in Year 4 and subsequently concentrating on the weaker swimmers throughout year 5 and 6.

Additionally, the intensive lessons that your Year 5 and 6 are currently attending for the last few weeks of the summer term have been a huge boost and due largely to your commitment to swimming we expect nearly all of your Year 6 swimmers will achieve their 25m.

It would be fantastic if every primary school had this approach to swimming to give all Year 6 pupils the best opportunity of being able to swim 25m on leaving KS2 and going on to senior school.

Best Regards
