Disappointment for Girls and Boys teams at County Football Finals
Posted On: 02 December 2016
Well done to both the Girls and Boys team (from Church Langley) who represented Harlow at the recent County Football Finals in Shrub End, Colchester. As expected the standard of play was very high, each of the 17 teams playing on both days were subsequent winners of their local region.
The Girls fought bravely but losing heavily in their first game (4-0) to the eventual winners St John Fisher, appeared to damage their confidence early on. They managed to secure 2 goal-less draws but lost 3 further group games by a single goal. At times they were dwarfed by some huge opponents and seemed to be outplayed by a single ‘superstar’ on each team. Unfortunately, try as they might, the girls couldn’t buy a goal in any their games; top-scorer Scarlett Harris seeing every single effort saved. The Girls finished with a lowly 2 points but still showed great determination and sportsmanship. The journey home was made better by a rewarding stop at McDonald’s. Great effort girls, it wasn’t to be today but the fact you never gave in make us incredibly proud.
In comparison the boy’s team fared much better. The previous experience by the girls gave the boys a slight advantage and they played some excellent football, remaining unbeaten throughout 8 games. Some of the matches were very tight and some excellent tight finishes by Tom Brazier snatched 3 victories. At times the boys held out some physically strong (and at times dirty) opponents, only conceding 1 goal in the group stages. They finished with an amazing 14 (3 wins and 5 draws) with the final game seeing the opposition Goalkeeper make 3 unbelievable saves; it was these saves that ultimately stopped the boys progressing to the semi-finals (losing out by 1 point). Like the girls, the boys showed incredible determination and amazing sportsmanship throughout. Once again the journey home was made better by a rewarding stop at McDonald’s.
